He joined the Indian politics in the 1980s and became a part of BJP in 1991. He became a part of 12th Lok Sabha in the year 1998 and also won the Gorakhpur seats in terms of 1999, 2004, and also in 2009 and 2014 elections. He became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in March 2017.
