He started his political career when he was 14 by campaigning for his father in 1967 election. He became a part of the General Committee of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK). He became a mayor in 2001. Karunanidhi had made it clear that Stalin would be his successor after his death. He became DMK Chief after the death of Karunanidhi.
