Her political career started in 1997 when she was selected as the councillor of the Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. She joined Bharathiya Janata Party and also served as the vice-president of Scheduled Tribes Morcha of the party. She held various position including the Governor of Jharkhand and MLA from Rairangpur Assembly constituency.
