Career of Willy Brandt

He became President of the Berlin House of Representatives from early 1955 to October 1957. After that, he held the office of President of the Bundesrat. He was appointed as Mayor of West Berlin in October 1957 which he held until December 1966. He served as the Chancellor of Germany from October 1969 to May 1974 when he resigned after the exposure of Gunter Guillaume.

His popular name was used by him as a Pseudonym in order to avoid recognition by Nazi agents. He worked as a left-wing journalist at the time of the Nazi regime and also fled to Norway followed by Sweden. The name was formally adopted by him in 1948.

Brandt lost his German citizenship in 1938 and he applied for Norwegian afterward. His Norwegian uniform also protected him to hide his identity from German forces in 1940.
