About Istiqlal Mosque

Istiqlal Mosque is a popular mosque located in Central Jakarta, Indonesia. It was founded in 1978. Friedrich Silaban was the architect credited for building it. The mosque was administered by the Ministry of State Secretariat alongside the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Indonesia. The mosque has two domes with an outer diameter of 45 meters alongside one minaret. It opens at 4:00 am and closes at 12 pm from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, the timings are 4:00 am to 11:00 pm while it remains closed on Sunday.

How To Reach Istiqlal Mosque

From the Sukarno-Hatta International airport, Metromini or Transjakarta buses are available, you have to take the bus which is going towards Gambir. If you are going there by train then also you have to get off at Gambir Train Station. From there, you can take "Ojek" a motorbike taxi or can walk to reach your destination.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Istiqlal Mosque

With a capacity to seat about 200 thousand people at a time, this mosque is the largest in Southeast Asia. Also, it is on the sixth rank among the largest mosques in the world.
As the mosque was built to celebrate independence, that's why got its name. The word "Istiqlal" means "Independence" in Arabic.
A large amount of money was spent to found this famous mosque. An amount of 7 billion Rupiah which means 12 million US dollars was the construction cost of this mosque. President Soekarno personally supervised the mosque at the time of its construction.
The mosque was visited by US President Obama and his wife Michelle Obama during their 18 hours visit to Indonesia.
It also represents the secular belief of the residents as the parking of nearby Catholic Church and the mosque is common and there is no conflict between both the religious places relating to space.
The mosque was the subject of a bomb attack two times. The first time was on 14 April 1948 and the second time again in April 1999. But there was no casualty both the times.
There are seven entrances in the mosque representing Seven Heavens according to Islamic cosmology. Each gate is named based on 99 Names of Allah.
The mosque has five floors representing the Five Pillars of Islam. The wudu fountains are on the ground floor while the main prayer hall and courtyard area on the first floor. Also, there are twelve round columns supporting the dome which represents the most accepted birthday of prophet Muhammad which is the 12th of Rabi' al-awwal.
