About Istiqlal Mosque
Istiqlal Mosque is a popular mosque located in Central Jakarta, Indonesia. It was founded in 1978. Friedrich Silaban was the architect credited for building it. The mosque was administered by the Ministry of State Secretariat alongside the Ministry of Religious Affairs in Indonesia. The mosque has two domes with an outer diameter of 45 meters alongside one minaret. It opens at 4:00 am and closes at 12 pm from Monday to Friday. On Saturday, the timings are 4:00 am to 11:00 pm while it remains closed on Sunday.

How To Reach Istiqlal Mosque
From the Sukarno-Hatta International airport, Metromini or Transjakarta buses are available, you have to take the bus which is going towards Gambir. If you are going there by train then also you have to get off at Gambir Train Station. From there, you can take "Ojek" a motorbike taxi or can walk to reach your destination.

  • As the mosque was built to celebrate independence, that's why got its name. The word "Istiqlal" means "Independence" in Arabic.
  • A large amount of money was spent to found this famous mosque. An amount of 7 billion Rupiah which means 12 million US dollars was the construction cost of this mosque. President Soekarno personally supervised the mosque at the time of its construction.
