He was selected by NASA in May 1980. He was a commander in the Shuttle Avionics Integration Laboratory. He also served as Technical Assistant to the Director and Deputy Chief of the Aircraft Operations Division. He was also the pilot of the Space Shuttle Challenger which was destroyed and all the crew members were killed in the accident.
