He is a former professional player in ice hockey. He was started to play in 1977 under the National Collegiate Athletic Association. MacTavish started to play in NHL in 1978. He also coached various teams after retiring as a player. The coach appeared as a hockey commentator in 2009. Later in 2012, he ventured into the management career securing a position of senior vice president in Edmonton Oilers.
