Career of Maithripala Sirisena

His political career started in 1989 when he became a member of the parliament of Sri Lanka. He served as several ministers starting from 1994. He was appointed as the general secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party and served as Minister of Health until 2014. He participated in the 2015 presidential election and won. He pledged as President of Sri Lanka on 9 January 2015 and remained in the office until 18 November 2019

The politician was highly criticized for not taking proper action to prevent the Easter Sunday bombing on 21 April 2019 despite a warning from Indian Intelligence Services. He was in Singapore at the time of the attack. Though he denied knowledge of the warning, he apologized for the failure to provide security to the citizen.
The politician is also accused of nepotism. One of the incidences is the appointment of his brother as chairman of the state-owned Sri Lanka Telecom just a few days after becoming president. His son-in-law became the public relations officer at the Ministry of Defence. Also, his son accompanied him in the Seventieth session of the United Nations General Assembly.
An Indian national was arrested in September of 2018 planning to assassinate himand former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. After the arrest, he alleged that the Indian Research and Analysis Wing was planning to kill him. Following the comment, the Indian High Commissioner met him and he also had a telephone conversation with the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
He was criticized by the LGBT activists and other civil society actors for his homophobic remarks during his speech in 2018, in which he was speaking against then Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe.
Sirisena also tried to delay the election from 2019 to June 2020.
He also commented on the cashew nuts served by the Sri Lankan Airlines after which the airlines stopped serving cashew nuts to the passengers.
