He had a big role in the Texas Revolution and was appointed the Secretary of War when Texas achieved independence from Mexico. He was selected for the president of the Democratic Party after Houston. He held the position on December 1, 1838. In his tenure, he urged Mexico to negotiate a peace settlement. He also provides land for the public school and the University of Texas. Houston was elected again after his tenure.
