- Up to the age of 14 he was home schooled after that he was sent to Hampden Sydney College, a Presbyterian college in Virginia but due to a religious issue, he left the college and further sent to boy's academy in Southampton County.
- After realizing his situation, his father's friend Lee suggested him to join military. He took his uncle's suggestion and joined the U.S. Army, in 1st Infantry Regiment.
- For his honor, a bronze statue was made in downtown Indianapolis at surrounding the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument. It was started in 1985 and ended in 1899.

- He was elected at the age of 67 and become the first president to die in office, he has the shortest life in the office as he was in office from March 4, 1841, to April 4, 1841
