- At the age of 9, he was orphaned. In 1880 his father died because of sudden heart attack and his mother died due to typhoid and pneumonia after three years of his father's death.
- In his childhood, he was always and about to die but due to his uncle John Minthorn he survived. His father always called him 'my little stick in the mud' because while crossing the road he always traps in the mud.
- He never crossed the east of the Mississippi River until he turned 22.
- He became the multi-millionaire with his own efforts. He said 'If a man has not made a million dollars by the time he is forty, he is not worth much'.
- After graduating he joined the British mining firm of Bewick, Moreing company as an engineer and he became the firm's one of four partners up to the age of 27 and later he left the firm in 1908 and started his own profitable business.
- He was never invited to the dam which was made in his honor. When he was at the post of the secretary dam's construction was started and when he became president the dam was still under construction.
