He kick-started his career in 1982 when he joined the band Los Dinos alongside his father and two sisters Selena and Suzette. He is credited with writing Selena's successful singles like Amor Prohibido, Como la Flor, and No me Queda Mas. After Selena's murder, he created a group Kumbia Kings in 1999. A. B. Quintanilla III Presents Joe Lopez was produced by him in 2004. He left the group in 2006. His single "Pina Colada Shot" was released in 2017.
