The official residence of the President of the U.S. is the White House. Its structure is built in the neoclassical style and took 8 years to complete. In the past, it has been referred to as the "President's Palace," the "President's House," and the "Executive Mansion". If one is to visit, a request must be submitted through a member of Congress, these public tours are usually self-guided.
Some Lesser Known Facts About The White House
- The tour of the White House is divided into two groups: the East wing where the President lives and the West Wing tour is where the business happens, and includes the famous Oval Office. They are hosted on Fridays and Saturdays during 08:00-11:00 am.

- It is the residence as well as the workplace of the president and the headquarters of the president?s principal staff members. The establishment is spread around on 18 acres of land and is the oldest federal building in the capital. It wasn?t officially called the White House until the name was adopted by Pres. Theodore Roosevelt.

- Its structure was decided upon when a competition was held to choose the design and planning for the Presidential residence in the year 1792. An Irish American architect named James Hoban won the commission with his plan for a Georgian mansion in the Palladian style.

- Its construction took place between the years 1792 and 1800. The use of Aquia Creek sandstone was made, painted white. The building has 132 rooms, 32 bathrooms, and 6 levels to accommodate all the people who live in, work in, and visit the White House. There are also 412 doors, 147 windows, 28 fireplaces, 7 staircases, and 3 elevators.

- For recreation, the White House has a variety of options available to its residents, including a tennis court, a jogging track, swimming pool, movie theater, billiard room, and a bowling lane. Hillary Clinton even converted one sitting room into the Music Room so that her husband could play the saxophone.

- Almost 10 people have died in the White House. Former Presidents William Henry Harrison and Zachary Taylor died here. The first three first ladies also passed away while in residence. These were Letitia Tyler, Caroline Harrison, and Ellen Wilson.

- The upkeep of the structure costs around $750,000 and $1.6 million each year. Repainting, which is done every now and then to maintain its bright, white exterior requires a whole lot of paint. At 55,000 square feet, it takes 570 gallons of paint to cover the entire surface!

- It is a lesser-known fact that the President is responsible for paying for all meals, at the White House, all events and the wages for those working the events, and even the cost of transportation. It's no surprise that former presidents like Bill Clinton, whose debt totaled between $2.28 million and $10.6 million by the time he left office, have left the residence in heavy debt.
