About Joelma Building
Joelma Building is a huge building located in Sau Paulo, Brazil. It is a 25-story building which was created in the year 1971. The building is popular for the drastic fire accident in February 1974 causing 179 deaths and 300 people injured. It was the worst skyscraper fire taking view the number of deaths before the collapse of World Trade Center towers on 9/11 in the year 2001. About 756 people were present at the time of fire and most of them were the employees of same banking company.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Joelma Building
- The fire was caused due to an overheated air conditioner on the twelfth floor and because of the flammable material used in the interior turned into a dangerous fire within 20 minutes. There was no emergency exit in the building. Though there was low flammable material in the stairwell it was filled with smoke and heat and no one could pass through it. It was the only stairwell in the building and fire alarms or fire sprinkler was also not installed. The rescue officers even tried to help the people with a helicopter but it was also not possible due to heat, smoke, and lack of landing space in the building.

- The fire accident was a subject to the film named "Catastrophe" in which footage of the fire and survivor testimony was used.
- Many people claim that the land was cursed before the building was made. There was also a story relating to the land. There was a house of a 26 years old chemist Paul Campbell in 1948 who lived there with his mother and two sisters. One evening for an unknown reason Paul killed his family and also killed himself. Also, a recovery staff got a corpse and died afterward when he touched the bodies.
- Though all of the building turned into a scary place where bodies were lying here and there but the most horrible was an elevator. It was sealed shut and when it was finally opened there was a mass of bodies that were fully burned making a pile on the floor and around the walls. It was difficult to count and at last, came to know they were 13 people but their identities are still not found. Also, no one has claimed about the missing person. These bodies were buried in St.Peter's Cemetery and popularly known as "13 Souls."
- Many people felt the presence of energies or some angry spirits above the fifteenth floor.
