About Hofdi House
Located in the capital of Reykjavik is the famous Hofdi house. It sits on Saebraut, the road in Reykjavík that runs adjacent to the coastline. It has a historical significance for various reasons but the major being, the meeting between Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev. It has held many notable personalities in its long years and today, remains a site of attraction and exploration. It is also among one of the most haunted places in Iceland.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Hofdi House
- Built-in the year 1909, the house was the place for the 1986 summit conference of president Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev which patent the end of the cold war. The responsibility of hosting the summit was given to Reykjavik, as a neutral place amid Moscow and Washington, which was held on Oct 11th and 12th.
- It has also held other heads of state, the Queen of England, Winston Churchill, and Marlene Dietrich among many. It served as the British Embassy until 1958 the city of Reykjavik acquired the building. It has been the site for formal receptions and other official acts since.
- Inspired by Nordic Art Nouveau, it was constructed in Norway and shipped to Iceland. It was also the private home of poet Mr. Einar Benediktsson. He moved into the house with his family in 1914 and named it, Hofdi.
- Mr. Einar Benediktsson himself claimed that the house was haunted by the ghost of a woman. Einar was also a judge and a most admired and respected in the community. He claimed that it was the ghost of Solborg Jonsdottir, who poisoned herself after Einar's verdict on an infamous assault case.
- Subsequent owners have also reported a similar sight. A woman dressed in white who often haunts at night. Though the house is not open to the public, people may still visit the premises and try to spot the ghost lady of the Hofdi house.
