He wrote a short story named "Aftermath of a Lengthy Rejection Slip" in his early writing career. He started writing poetry after he was hospitalized in 1955. His first printed publication was "His Wife, the Painter" in 1960. He wrote a series of comic books in association with illustrator Robert Crumb in the 1980s.
