Max Baer was a boxer as well as a referee from America and also had done roles in films and television occasionally. He was at the number 22 of 100 greatest punchers of all time according to Ring Magazine's list.

Career of Max Baer (Boxer)
He started boxing professionally in 1929. Some of his memorable fights are as under:

Fight with Frankie Campbell


There was a fight between him and Frankie Campbell on August 25, 1930, in San Francisco. In the second round, he slipped to the canvas and Campbell went to his corner and thinking that he is getting count started waving hand to the public. He got up and gave him such a powerful punch that sent him to the canvas. In the fifth round, he gave him punch after punch which broke his jaw and the next day Campbell died in a hospital.

Fight with Ernie Schaaf


He gave Schaaf a great punch right to his jaw which shook him completely and in last round, he beats him in the ring ruthlessly on his head and body and gave him three punches right to the jaws. Schaaf suffers from a headache after the fight and died after five months in a ring fighting with an Italian fighter Primo Carnera. But the doctors said that he was suffering from meningitis (a swelling of the brain) after the fight with Max Baer which results in his death.

Fight with Max Schmeling


There was a fight between him and German heavyweight and former world champion, Max Schm8, 1933 on June 8, 1933, at Yankee Stadium. In which he knocked him down in the tenth round and just after that referee stopped the match declaring him the winner.

After winning the fight with Max Schmeling he went to Long Island City, New York to fight for Primo Carnera, Heavyweight Champion of the World.

James J. Braddock


He losses the fight with Braddock as he was underestimating him. However, he gives heavy punches to him but he was such a strong man he comes back until he wore Max down.

Acting


He got a break in the film The Prizefighter and the Lady. He appeared in about 20 films some of them are Over She Goes and Fisticuffs in 1938, he was Kerrigan in The Navy Comes Through in 1942. In the following year, he appeared in Buckskin Frontier and Ladies' Day and in Africa Screams he worked with his brother. In the film The Harder They Fall he was a boxer in 1956 and in the next year he appeared in Utah Blaine as Gus Ortmann. In The Tortoise and the Hare, he wears the dress of a hare and was called "Max Hare".

  • He was once called by film star Greta Garbo to meet on her set. She, however, demanded total privacy and even studio head was not allowed to visit on her set. Their romance ended when he returned to New York for getting trained for his next fight.
