He joined Sao Paulo to start his football journey. He participated in the UEFA Champions League final in 2005. He played in over 140 games in international team. He was the part of the Brazilian team in the World Cups in 1994 and 2002. He was the captain of the team Brazil when it defeated Germany in the World cup final in 2002. He took retirement from the game in 2008.
