He became the Attorney-General of Australia in 1901. He became Prime Minister of Australia in 1903 until April 1904. He again held the office in July 1905 up to November 1908. In 1909, he was again voted as the Prime Minister and remained in the office in 1910. He announced his retirement from politics due to some neurological condition in 1913.
