His first published song was "When You Want 'Em, You Can't Get 'Em" which earned him 50 percent after he started working for Aeolian Company and produced their dozens of rolls under his own and assumed names. In 1924, he composed for orchestra and piano Rhapsody in Blue. He signed a contract with Fox Film Corporation to compose the songs for the movie Delicious.
