He started making short films like What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This? while still in NYU. The black and white "I Call First" later renamed as "Who's That Knocking at My Door" was his first full-length feature film. He made a low-budget film "Boxcar Bertha" in 1972. He directed actress Ellen Burstyn for the film "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore" in the year 1974. He also directed the music video of Michael Jackson's "Bad".
