Starting the career with small roles, he also worked as an assistant director. He worked with Dev Anand in two films "Baazi", and "Jaal" and both were the superhits. His film "Aar Paar" was a blockbuster. His greatest disappointment was "Kaagaz Ke Phool" but gain international success. His film "Chaudhvin Ka Chand" and "Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam" were also commercially successful. "Pyaasa" was surprisingly hit. But his sudden death leads to several incompleted projects. His film "Baharen Phir Bhi Aayengi" was completed by Dharmendra replacing him in lead.
