She started her career as a child artist in the films like Leatherface, Pooja, Ek Hi Bhool and more. She is known for her work in the films like Baiju Bawra, Parineeta, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai and more. She portrayed an alcoholic lady in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. She also won a Filmfare for her performance in the film "Kaajal".

Did Meena Kumari takes alcohol? Yes. Her prescription became her addiction. One peg of brandy was prescribed to her as a sleeping medication as she got exhausted with the hectic filming schedule. But later on, her husband came to know that bottles of Dettol in their bathroom were filled with brandy. Her heavy drinking habits damaged her liver and also her good looks, which later became the reason for her death.

She hails from a poor background and started working when she was just four. She played appeared in the film "Farzand-e- Watan" when she was 6.
This fact is strange but true that the actress has played the character of Jairaj Singh's daughter in her debut movie "Leatherface" also known as "Farzand-e-Watan" and also appear as his love interest in the film "Maghroor".
The director of her debut movie, Vijay Bhatt changed her name to Baby Meena from Mehajabeen Naaz which later on became her stage name as Meena Kumari.
