She started her career with the regional films and her first film was a Bengali film, Mahanagar at the time she was just 15. She is also known for her negative role in the film "Anamika". The actress also worked with her husband in the number of films including Abhimaan, Chupke Chupke, and Sholay. She appeared in the role of the mother in the films like Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho and more.
