About Uttam Kumar
Uttam Kumar whose born name was Arun Kumar Chatterjee was born on 3 September 1926, Ahiritola, Calcutta, Bengal, British India and died on 24 July 1980. He was not only an actor but also the music composer, playback singer, director, and producer. He dropped out from high school and start woking as a clerk in Kolkata Port trust along with this he also acted in non-professional theaters groups. His joint family has its own theater group named 'Suhrid Samaj' which does the non-professional acts.

He and his younger brother Tarun are starred in many same films some of them are Sonar Harin, Deya Neya, Dhanyi Meye, Mon Niye, Saptapadi, Maya Mriga, Sesh Anka, Agniswar and Kamal lata. A noted lyricist, Pulak Bandyopadhyay is his uncle.

Career of Uttam Kumar
In 1948 he started his career with movie 'Drishtidan' which was directed by Nitin Bose after that he worked in four or five films that all have flopped and the people laugh at him at one time he thinks to leave the cinema and works in Calcutta ports. His wife encourages him and he contact with M.P Studios and they produce a movie for three years. From the movie 'Agni Pariksha' in 1954, he got famous and this movie ran for 65 weeks. He wants to try a new character with different roles and he appeared in a different role with movie Mayamriga(1960), Khokababur Pratyabartan(1960) and Thana Theke Aschi (1965).In 1959 he played a character of a mentally disturbed person in movie 'Marutirtha Hinglaj'. He also played a role of villain in movie 'Aparichita' (1969).

Along with the Bengali movies, he also appeared around 15 Hindi films named 'Bandie' with Sulakshana Pandit, Chhoti Si Mulaqat with Vyjayanthimala, 'Anand Ashram', 'Kitaab' with Vidya SinhaAmanush, and much more. He worked in film 'Jhinder Bondi' with Soumitra Chatterjee(actor) which was directed by a great director Tapan Sinha. He also got success by producing many movies like Bhrantibilash, Harano Sur, Saptapadi, Grihadah and so on. He also directs the movies like Bon Palashir Padaboli and Sudhu Ekti Bochhor. For movie 'Kaal Tumi Aleya' he composed a song which was sung by Hemanta Mukherjee and Asha Bhonsle.

He starts writing autobiography named 'Harano Dinguli Mor' which means My Bygone days but he couldn't complete that book. As a singer, he recorded the songs for All India Radio and he has sung songs for the Tagore album.

In his lifetime he has achieved many awards like in 1968 he won National Film Award for Best Actor for Chiriyakhana and Antony Firingee, as producer he won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Bengali for movie Uttar Falguni in 1963, he won B.F.J.A Best Actor award for many movies like Saptapadi (1961), Grihadaha (1967), Ekhane Pinjar (1971), Amanush (1974), Bahnisikha (1976) and so on.

From Prosad magazine he won the Best Actor award for movie Stri (1973) which he received from Kanan Devi. For movie Amanush (1975) he received Filmfare Award for greatest Actor. For movie Anand Ashram (1977) he got Best Actor award both from the Prosad magazine and Sanonskritik Sanbadik Sanostha and much more.
