Massey ventured into acting with the film High Treason, released in 1928. His first radio part was in 1941 released Philip Morris Playhouse. He is best recognized for his commanding, stage-trained voice. He is also remembered for his title character in Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940). The actor is widely noted for his part as Dr. Gillespie in the NBC television series Dr. Kildare (1961-1966). His character Abraham Farlan in A Matter of Life and Death is much appreciated. He is also known for playing Jonathan Brewster in Arsenic and Old Lace (1944).
