It is a 38 meters (including pedestal) high statue with arm stretch about 28 meters wide which was made between 1922 and1931.

Some Lesser Known Facts About Christ the Redeemer

  • There are some hidden messages in this monument. Yes, it's true, it is made with reinforced concrete while the outer shell is made with about six million soapstone tiles. The workers who made these tiles had written some notes on the back of the tiles which is considered as hidden messages.
  • The statue is exposed to lightning due to its location at the mountain top. Also, one of its fingers was broken due to lightning struck in 2014.

  • At first, it was decided that the statue will hold a globe in one hand and a cross in the other.
  • The masterpiece was not built in its home country. It was made in France by sculptor Paul Landowski and was later on shipped to Brazil. The credit of remaking it with reinforced concrete goes to Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa and French engineer Albert Caquot.
