She started athletics from the small age of 2 and her stepfather was her first coach. By the time she stepped into her teen days she won many national and regional titles.
She won the World Championships in Athens in 400 m and she completed the race in 49.77 seconds.
She was selected in the team of Australia's 4 × 100 m relays for the Commonwealth Games in Auckland, New Zealand in 1990 and their team won the gold medal.
She is the founder of the Cathy Freeman Foundation that was started in 2012. This foundation is joined with four another branches that give the encouragement to the children to go to school so the gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australian children can be filled.
After taking the retirement from the game she got involved in many charities, in fact, to an Australian Indigenous Education Foundation, she was a brand ambassador until 2012.
In 2006 she appeared in a four-part television documentary series that is one road trip along with actress Deborah Mailman and the name of that show was 'Going Bush'.
