She started participating in the sport at the time she was in high school. She won a silver medal at the 2004 Summer Olympics in the 200 meters race. In the following year, she won a gold medal at the World Championships in Helsinki participating in the 200 meters race. She won her first Olympic gold medal when she was a part of the U.S. women's team at the 4 × 400 meters relay.
