After joining Partito Popolare Italiano (PPI), he became Provincial Secretary in 1999. He became the President of the Province of Florence in 2004 and held the position until 2009 when he was appointed as the Mayor of Florence. He served as the Mayor until March 2014. He became Prime Minister of Italy in February 2014 and served at the position until December 2016. He served as the Secretary of the Democratic Party from 2013 to 2018 and became the leader of Italian Viva in 2019.
