- He was the first President to use the Telephone and the typewriter in his office.
- He was listed in one of the five presidents who served in the civil war and during these wars he wounded for five times and the most serious wound he got in the 'Battle of South Mountain'. For his great bravery, he was promoted to the brevet major general.
