Her acting career started in 1983 with a role in Punjabi film “Aasra Pyar Da.’ However she didn’t work for a period starting from 1983 to 1996 and returned to acting with a play titled “Saalgirah.” Her work in the film ‘Sardari Begum” earned her a National film Award. She also gained audience applaud with her work in the films like Devdas, Khamosh Pani, Veer-Zaara and Hum Tum. She also appeared in the television series like Kanyadaan, ER and Prratima.
