He started acting with the North American Negro Theater. He made his Broadway debut with the lead role in "Lysistrata." His first film role was in the film "No Way Out." He played a starring role in the crime film "The Defiant Ones." His acting in the film "Lilies of the Field" earned him an Academy Award. He also directed a number of films like A Piece of the Action, Stir Crazy, Let's Do It Again, and more.
