He started working at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1966. He appeared in many television series like "I", "Claudius", "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy". He played the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in "Star Trek: The Next Generation". He appeared in the film "Jeffrey", "The Lion in Winter". He appeared in "Hamlet" as King Claudius.
