In 1920 he started working on stage in Thalia Yiddish Theater. After that, he appeared for many small and uncredited roles in the 1930s. He got a role in the comedy My Man Godfrey as Alice Brady in 1936. His character was a ballet instructor Kolenkov in the film You Can't Take It with You which won Best Picture Award later on. He was a prince who became fashion designer in the film Vogues of 1938. He also appeared in films such as Spring Parade, Hellzapoppin', Cracked Nuts and many more.
He also performed in television series like Studio One, Broadway Television Theatre and The Chevrolet Tele-Theatre. He also made films in France and Italy, including The Christmas That Almost Wasn't.
