After leaving U.S.Army, he started working in radio as an announcer at Minneapolis station WLOL. His first break was in the film The Farmer's Daughter and his character was Loretta Young. He performed in two science fiction The Thing from Another and Them!. He had a starring role with John Wayne in the films like Hondo, Island in the Sky, Big Jim McLain, and The Sea Chase. He had also starred in Gun the Man Down and TV remake of Wayne's 1948 classic Red River. He is known for his performance in television show Gunsmoke as Matt Dillon. After Gunsmoke, he performed in movies and television series like How the West Was Won and also worked in McClain's Law. He appeared in How the West Was Won as Zeb Macahan.
