He was twenty-one when he made his first stage performance at the University of Virginia. He had a starring role in military drama So Proudly We Hail.

His first film break is in Rushin' Art in 1935. He worked in The Phenix City Story as Rhett Tanner in 1955. His seven films were released in 1956, The Harder They Fall as Jim Weyerhause, These Wilder Years as Leland G. Spottsford, Tea, and Sympathy as Herb Lee, Tension at Table Rock as Kirk, Friendly Persuasion as Soldier, The Unguarded Moment as Mr. Bennett, Three Brave Men as Mayor Henry L. Jensen.
He appeared on Hot Summer Night as Deputy Lou Follett, The Tattered Dress as Lester Rawlings, Trooper Hook as Charlie Travers in 1957. His character Judge Parker in the film The Fiend Who Walked the West which was released in 1958. In the next year, he performed in the movie Night of the Quarter Moon as Clinton Page, and in Elmer Gantry as George F. Babbitt in 1960. In the following year, he performed in four films The Absent-Minded Professor as Defense Secretary, The Young Savages as R. Daniel Cole, Love in a Goldfish Bowl as Sen. Clyde Holloway, The Young Doctors as Jim Bannister. In 1962, he was Senator Orrin Knox in the film Advise & Consent and was Herman in 40 Pounds of Trouble. He worked as Defense Secretary in the film Son of Flubber, as Gardiner Fraleigh in the film The Thrill of It All and performed as Alonzo Hyde in The Man from Galveston.
He acted in six films in 1964 A Tiger Walks as Governor Robbins, The Brass Bottle as Prof. Kenton, Good Neighbor Sam as Mr. Burke, Kisses for My President as Sen. Walsh, Send Me No Flowers as Dr. Ralph Morrissey, Youngblood Hawke as Quentin Judd. In the following year, he appeared in Fluffy as Griswald. He acted in two films in 1966 and in both the film he was General, he was Gen. Wallace Bleecker in The Glass Bottom Boat and was Gen. Smithburn in Birds Do It. He appeared in The Hardy Boys: The Mystery of the Chinese Junk in 1967 as Dr. Montrose. In 1969, The Trouble with Girls as Johnny and in the next year Tora! Tora! Tora! as Admiral Harold R. Stark.
In 1971, his character was Mayor Robert Chisholm in the film How to Frame a Figg and was Morgan in The Million Dollar Duck. He appeared in Now You See Him, Now You Don't as Mr. Sampson, Avanti! as J.J. Blodgett in 1972. He was Ernie, A banker in the film Charley and the Angel in 1973 and also appeared in Wilbur and Orville: The First to Fly. His performance was seen in The Photographer in 1974 as Sgt. Sid Collins.
In 1978, he performed in The Seniors as The Banker. In 1984, he played the role of Howard in the film Sixteen Candles and his final film role was of Mr. Corben in Gremlins.
