About Bud Abbott
Original name of Bud Abbott is William Alexander Abbott. Born on October 2, 1897, he had also worked in radio, burlesque, stage, television, producer and also a comedian. He died at the age of 76 in Woodland Hills California due to cancer on April 24, 1974. He was born in a show business family in Asbury Park New Jersey.
His father installed him in the Box Office of Casino Theater in Brooklyn. In Washington DC, he met Jenny Mae Pratt who was a burlesque dancer and also a comedian. They both get married in 1918, they had adopted two children after their marriage.
Career of Bud Abbott
He had a partnership with Lou Costello, In 1936 they formed a team and perform together in burlesque, vaudeville, minstrel shows and stage shows. In 1938 they received national exposure on Kate Smith Hour radio show. In 1940 they signed their first film One night in the Tropics.
At the time of World War II, they both were among the most popular and highest paid stars in the world. From 1940 to 1956 they made 36 films. In 1940's they owned their own radio program named The Abbott and Costello Show. In 1950's their comedy was introduced on live TV, the name of the show was The Colgate Comedy Hour.
But their relationship was not very good. They had strains among them relating to salary and their ego problem, Abbott was an alcoholic person and according to Lou's daughter Chris Costello, this was also a very big reason for their strains.
In 1960, after the death of Lou Costello in 1959, Candy Candido became his new partner after that he performed in the dramatic television episode named Jokes on me.
