He got his first film role in Lucky Cisco Kid in 1940 at 20th Century Fox. In the same year, he appeared in films Sailor's Lady, Kit Carson, and William Wyler's The Westerner. In the following year, he had supporting roles in Fox films Tobacco Road, Belle Starr, Ball of Fire, and Swamp Water. In 1942, he got the lead role in B Berlin Correspondent and also in Tyrone Power in Crash Dive in 1943 and in the same year he appeared in The Ox-Bow Incident, The North Star and on December 7th: The Movie which was for the publicity of government. In 1944, he appeared on December 7th: The Movie, Up in Arms, The Purple Heart and in Wing and a Prayer. Also, he had worked in Laura in the same year and this role made him well known to the public. In 1945, he worked in State Fair, Fallen Angel, A Walk in the Sun is a war movie. In 1946, he has given his excellent performance in Canyon Passage and The Best Years of Our Lives. This film was a grand hit and in the next year, he appeared in Boomerang! and Daisy Kenyon. He worked at Night of the Demon, Spring Reunion, Zero Hour! in 1957 and in The Fearmakers and Enchanted Island in the next year. He appeared in supporting roles in The Failing of Raymond, Innocent Bystanders, Airport 1975, A Shadow in the Streets, The First 36 Hours of Dr. Durant, Take a Hard Ride, The Last Tycoon, The Last Hurrah, and Good Guys Wear Black in 1970s.
