About Maharana Pratap

Maharana Pratap was one of the greatest kings in Indian history. He fought many battles in his life but most remembered for the Battle of Haldighati and the Battle of Dewar. He was strongly against the expansion of the Mughal Empire. He is still remembered as a great Hindu King and stories of his bravery makes every Indian proud.

Career of Maharana Pratap

When he took in hand the command of Mewar kingdom, the fertile land of Mewar was already under control of Mughals so he battled to free Chittor to get his state free from Mughals. On 18 June 1576, he battled against Mughal emperor Akbar at Haldighati. When rebellions from Bengal, Bihar, and Punjab started coming into action, the pressure of Mughals over Mewar lessens and Maharana got the opportunity to attack and win the Mughal post at Dewair.

Maharana Pratap was very strong who could carry with him an 80-kilogram spear and two swords weighing around 208 kilograms in total. His armor also weighed 72 kilograms. ( what a strong man he was!)
These things could be still seen preserved at the City Royal gallery museum in Udaipur.
He said "No" to compromise. At the time, almost all Rajput ruler had surrendered to Akbar. Akbar had sent six diplomatic missions to make a peaceful alliance with him.
He did not get much love of his father Udai Singh. The senior officials of Mewar founded him as a more suitable ruler than his brother Jagmal.
His childhood name was "Kika".
Once a Mughal soldier tried to attack him from behind but it was not easy to kill Maharana Pratap. The king saw him from the edge of his eye and attacked him with his sword and rest is the history.
Once Maharana got an opportunity to kill Raja Man Singh who was a Rajput king but a Mughal commander. Man Singh was caught by Pratap's soldiers when Man Singh was on the hunt but Maharana said he preferred to face his opponents on the battleground. (Wow! What a brave soldier he was.)
His battle techniques were amazing. As compare to better equipped and powerful army of Mughals, he has just a few soldiers but caused much damage to the enemy army and was never defeated by the enemies.
He respected women. Once Maharana's son Amar Singh capture some Muslim women as trophy hostages after a battle but Maharana did not like the action of his son and at the same time, he freed the women and sent them home respectfully.
When Udai Singh lost at the battle, the fort of Chittor was taken by Mughal forces. Pratap with his family took shelter at Udaipur. Pratap took a pledge that until he reclaimed the fort of Chittor, he will sleep at the bed of straw and eat in a leaf plate. However, he was not successful in getting back the fort but lived with his pledge. Until now, in the honor of great ruler, many Rajput put a leaf under their plate and straws under their bed.
Not only Pratap but his horse Chetak was also great. Chetak sacrificed his life to save the life of Rana.
It is said that his army chief battled for some time after getting beheaded.
According to some reports Nepal's royal family has same blood of Chittor royals.
Very few of us are aware of the fact that the Mewar ruler had 11 wives with 17 sons and 5 daughters.
