About Maharana Pratap
Maharana Pratap was one of the greatest kings in Indian history. He fought many battles in his life but most remembered for the Battle of Haldighati and the Battle of Dewar. He was strongly against the expansion of the Mughal Empire. He is still remembered as a great Hindu King and stories of his bravery makes every Indian proud.

Career of Maharana Pratap
When he took in hand the command of Mewar kingdom, the fertile land of Mewar was already under control of Mughals so he battled to free Chittor to get his state free from Mughals. On 18 June 1576, he battled against Mughal emperor Akbar at Haldighati. When rebellions from Bengal, Bihar, and Punjab started coming into action, the pressure of Mughals over Mewar lessens and Maharana got the opportunity to attack and win the Mughal post at Dewair.

  • He said "No" to compromise. At the time, almost all Rajput ruler had surrendered to Akbar. Akbar had sent six diplomatic missions to make a peaceful alliance with him.

  • When Udai Singh lost at the battle, the fort of Chittor was taken by Mughal forces. Pratap with his family took shelter at Udaipur. Pratap took a pledge that until he reclaimed the fort of Chittor, he will sleep at the bed of straw and eat in a leaf plate. However, he was not successful in getting back the fort but lived with his pledge. Until now, in the honor of great ruler, many Rajput put a leaf under their plate and straws under their bed.
