About Abu Mena
Abu Mena is an abundant town located in Egypt. It was a monastery complex and a Christian pilgrimage center in Late Antique Egypt. The site is located about 50 kilometers away from the popular city Alexandria. It covers an area of 83.63 hectares. It was included in the list of World Heritage Site in 1979 and was added to the list of the Heritage Sites in Danger in the year 2001. It was due to the agricultural efforts as a result of which water table rises in the area leading to collapse of some of the buildings of the site.

  • The site was discovered by German archeologist Kaufman in the year 1907.
  • There are several stories relating to the place. It is said that after the martyred of Menas of Alexandria, his body was taken from Alexandria on a camel, towards Lake Mareotis but at some point, the camel stopped and did not walk further. The body's attendants took this as a divine will and buried it at the same point.

  • Another prevalent story is that the people forgot the location of the tomb and it was once discovered by a shepherd. Once a shepherd was passing this desert with a sheep suffering from the disease of scab. The sheep-dipped himself in the water of the little spring near the tomb and rolled about in it and was healed. The shepherd saw this miracle and started taking the dust from that place which was used by him to cure other sheep suffering from the disease. Also Constantine I's daughter was cured with the dust who also found Menas' body at the place. After which a church was constructed on the site.
