The Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Centre in Nassau is an educational fun venue for the entire family. It is appropriate for families with kids as well. It was created as a nature preserve in the 50s and today it is a tropical garden, conservation centre and much more.
Some Lesser Known Facts About Ardastra Gardens, Zoo and Conservation Park
- The center was opened as a Nature Preserve, by Jamaican horticulturist Hedley Edwards in the 1950s. Over the years, it has advanced into a tropical garden, conservation center, boutique zoo. Wildlife rescue & rehab facilities are also available here. It aims at the conservation of wildlife and endangered species in the area.
- The center is spread across an area of over 4 acres and has a wide variety of exotic and native wildlife. You will find flamingos, hutias, parrots, lemurs, jaguars, iguanas, and about 130 more interesting animals on the grounds.
- The flamingos are popular for their marching skills. There was a time when they were almost extinct in the 50s. As a conservation exercise, the government made the decision to breed flamingos in captivity. They chose Ardastra Gardens as a home for the birds
- The Ardastra Gardens are a lovely spot to stroll through. There are a large variety and textures of flowers and other plants in the area, from coconut palms, bromeliads, orchids, bougainvillea to hibiscus blossoms in different colors!
- Apart from the marching flamingos show, there are several programs and events certain to entertain and educate. You can feed the playful and chatty lory parrots as well.
- There are also special residents that are named Jackie, Chunk, and Slim. These are the non-venomous Boa Constrictors. They are all between six and seven feet in length and though, not containing venom, are still considered a threat.
