A classic landmark of southwestern hospitality, La Fonda is a beautiful luxury hotel situated in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Its origins go as far back as the 16th century. Its Spanish colonial-style architecture is a treat for history nerds. "La Fonda" translates to, quite simply, "the inn". It started as an inn during the 600s and today is one of the beloved hotels in the region.
Some Lesser Known Facts About La Fonda on the Plaza
- A former structure, called "La Fonda Americana" by the locals, though originally named the United States hotel was burnt to the ground in the year 1912. It was then constructed and restored in the 1920s. The building today is decorated with the key elements being Spanish and Native American. It offers an outdoor pool, full-service spa, boutique shops, and fine-dining restaurants for its guests.

- The hotel offers 179 unique guestrooms, including 14 exclusive, luxury-level rooms and suites built around a rooftop terrace. It's large and meandering main floor space is lit by hand-crafted chandeliers. The original designer of the hotel was Mary Jane Colter; she incorporated traditional local art and design into her lodgings, like hand-painted headboards. Rugs and bed pillows showcased colcha embroidery?an art form in colonial New Mexico.

- It has housed former American Presidents like Ulysses S. Grant, John F. Kennedy, and Bill Clinton. It was also used as a filming location for the noir film "Ride the pink horse".

- With its history and charm, dazzling markets, and busy restaurants, one may forget the fact that it is in fact, one of the most haunted places in the nation. Keeping in mind that it goes back 400 years, it is common knowledge with the locals of the haunting and the stories associated with them. Many entities are "active" and make their presence known from time to time.

- One such entity is the ghost of chief justice of the Territorial Supreme Court, who was shot to death in the year 1867 in the hotel's lobby. It is said that during a heated argument with a member of the Territorial Legislature, Justice John P. Slough was shot and killed. The murderer was later acquitted. Slough can be seen walking the halls and standing in the lobby in his traditional long, black coat.

- Another ghost that haunts the premises is that of an unfortunate bride, murdered on the night of her wedding. She was allegedly killed by a jealous ex-lover. She has been seen in her bridal attire in the suite room 510.

- A miserable salesman jumped to his death after losing his company's money in a card game. He leaped into the deep-well which was right outside the gambling hall. Members of the staff, as well as lodgers, have reported seeing a ghostly figure appear and then jump into the floor and vanish.
