He played his first professional match for Bonymaen RFC. His first test match at the under-21 level was against Argentina in the year 2006. He served as a captain of team Wales in a game against Italy in 2009. He was a part of Lions' team for the tour of Australia in 2013 and became the team's captain when Sam Warburton got an injury in the second test. He also participated in the 2019 Rugby World Cup.
