He began to be the pastor of Greater Emanuel Temple of Faith, a storefront church in Smithers, West Virginia when he was 23. In the starting, the church has only ten members it increased to 100 and it was racially integrated. He started T. D. Jakes Ministries in 1994. In 1996, he founded the Potter's House, a non-denominational megachurch.
