Career of Jhansi Ki Rani

Laxmibai was married to Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, King of Jhansi. She gave birth to a boy, who died when he was an infant. She adopted a child and renamed him with her son's name Damodar Rao. After the death of the king, British Government applied Doctrine of Lapse as Damodar was adopted and there is no scion of the throne. But the queen refused to give up her kingdom and said: "I shall not surrender my Jhansi". She fought with bravery, also took help of Tantia Tope but failed. She died in June 1858, near Phool Bagh of Gwalior.

She was just four when her mother died and was raised by her father.
She was raised like a son and was trained in fencing, archery, shooting, and horseriding. She was more independent then other girls.
She was married to Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, King of Jhansi at the small age of seven years. She was the second wife of the king. Her husband renamed her as 'Lakshmi Bai'.
Her own baby (Damodar Rao) died when he was an infant of four months. The couple then decided to adopt a son of Maharaja's cousin and renamed him, Damodar Rao. But British Government does not accept him and tried to impose "Doctrine of Lapse". However, she refused to accept this rule.
She had a great role in 1857 revolt. Even today she is remembered as an example of bravery.
Two postage stamps were introduced in 1957 to honor her on the anniversary of revolt.
She did not want that Britishers capture her body that's why she asked a hermit to burn her body after her death. Some people believe that she was cremated by few locals after her death. Her tomb is situated in Phool Bagh, Gwalior.
Her horse "Badal" was also very loyal to her. She fought her last battle with Britishers riding on his back and her son was also tied on queen's back.
She had three loyal horses Sarangi, Pavan, and Badal. Badal died when she was escaping from the fort to Gwalior.
