Laxmibai was married to Raja Gangadhar Rao Newalkar, King of Jhansi. She gave birth to a boy, who died when he was an infant. She adopted a child and renamed him with her son's name Damodar Rao. After the death of the king, British Government applied Doctrine of Lapse as Damodar was adopted and there is no scion of the throne. But the queen refused to give up her kingdom and said: "I shall not surrender my Jhansi". She fought with bravery, also took help of Tantia Tope but failed. She died in June 1858, near Phool Bagh of Gwalior.
