As a Singer
He started singing at the radio station. He signed a contract with Columbia Records in 1929. He had recorded various "hillbilly"-style records in 1930 and 1931 in New York City. His duet with Jimmy Long was hit in 1932. He owns Challenge Records. He had made 640 recordings which include more than 300 songs written or co-written by him.

His first film was as more than 300 songs written or co-written by him in In Old Santa Fe. He had a starring role in the 12-part serial The Phantom Empire. He had worked in forty-four films with Republic Pictures Corp. He played the role of Mary Castle in the film Texans Never Cry in 1951.
Radio and television career
His weekly show on CBS Radio, Gene Autry's Melody Ranch was successful in the year 1940 to 1956. In 1950, he became the producer of his own television show on CBS and also starred in it. He also made various appearances on ABC-TV's Jubilee USA in the late 1950s.
