His career started when he co-founded a rap group "All in Together Now" with his cousins Russell Jones and Gary Grice. They became popular in their own city but did not get an opportunity to sign with a record label. He worked with Tommy Boy Records as a solo artist credited as Prince Rakeem. He founded "Wu-Tang Clan" with two of his cousins and five friends in 1992. His debut single "Protect Ya Neck" was released in 1992.
