She is an actress who received several awards, such as Golden globe three times, Emmy award three times, Oscar three times, Tony award two times, Screen Actors Guild Awards four times, Critics Choice Awards four times, Independent Spirit Award one time, and Canadian Screen Award. She has two sisters Lynn Allen and Mary Allen and one brother David Allen. In 1976, she went to the Northern Illinois University, from where she completed her graduation. She got married to Peter Friedman on 1st January 1990, they have one child, they got separated on 10th March 2002.
