She is an American actress, dancer, choreographer, television director, television producer, and a member of the President's Committee on the Arts and Humanities, born on 16 January 1950, in Houston, Texas, USA. She is the only actress who did all three parts of "Fame" series. She is well known for her appearance in "Fame" television series. She went to the Howard University where she received her B.A. and Doctorate degree. Now she used to teach dance to the young dancers. She got married two times, first, she got married to Winfred Wilford on 22nd June 1975, their marriage not lasted for long and got divorced in 1983, later she got married to Norman Nixon on 27th April 1984, they have two children.

She started her acting career from the chorus of Purlie. During her initial days in this way she received critical attention from her viewers. She not only worked as an actress but also she worked as a producer, writer and as a choreographer. She has also directed some movies, some of her well-directed movies are Girlfriends, Quantum Leap, Everybody Hates Chris, Life Is Not a Fairy Tale, The Jamie Foxx Show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Let's Stay Together, How to Get Away with Murder, Survivor's Remorse.
